Towson University’s Ice Hockey team ended their season by winning the Eastern Collegiate Hockey Association Playoff (ECHA) Tournament in West Chester, PA this past weekend. Towson, tagged as an underdog going into the tournament, faced rivals who are ranked in the top 25 of the country in their bracket.
Towson got off to a good start on Friday by posting an impressive 8-4 victory over Lehigh University.
Towson got off to a sluggish start on Saturday against Lebanon Valley College (ranked #22 in the US & #2 seed in the tournament), but made an exciting come back – taking the game into double overtime. Freshman Matt McGuire, netted the sudden death goal to win (4-3) at nearly midnight. Junior goaltender Steve Kelly, made several key saves at important junctures of the game – including a quick pad save late in the first OT.
Sunday’s matchup against the US Naval Academy (#1 seed & #14 in the country) in the ECHA Championship was expected to be a blow out for Navy because Towson has failed to beat Navy over the past three years. Navy jumped out to an early two goal lead in the first five minutes of the first period. However, despite Navy’s early lead, Towson didn’t give up and scored nine consecutive goals. Junior Mike Cifelli, led the way for Towson, scoring five goals while assisting another three. The Tigers pulled off the seemingly impossible win, stunning Navy (9-3).
Several Towson players received awards. Steve Kelly, goaltender, was named “Tournament All Star” and made the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Second Team for his performance throughout the season. Mike Cifelli made the “All-Tournament Team” and won “Tournament MVP”, while Casey Jendras, Matt McGuire, and Joey Vonakis made the “All-Tournament MVP Team”.
This victory gave Towson their first Division I league title in 14 years!
